• The original Dreamgirls musical opened on Broadway in 1981 and was adapted into a film starring Beyonce Knowles in 2006.
• While the writers deny such a connection, The Dreams’ story closely resembles that of The Supremes, and Mary Wilson of The Supremes eventually titled her 1986 autobiography Dreamgirls: My Life as a Supreme.
• Amber Riley, who will be playing Effie White, is better known as Mercedes Jones from the hit TV show Glee.
